FRIENDS OF AKUEM

A small group of women (including staff, volunteers, students and tutors) from the Warrandyte Neighbourhood House have formed a support group for a birthing clinic in a tiny village in Southern Sudan. Our contact is a midwife, originally from Warrandyte, who left to work in Sudan for Medecins sans Frontiers.

After being posted to Akuem, a village so remote that it only receives goods and mail twice a month, she sent us a request for a list of goods they urgently needed. This was a very modest list (including watches, scissors, a thermos and cups, balloons and sparklers, a solar calculator and non hybrid seeds).

Our group managed to collect these goods and post them via Medecins sans Frontiers in Kenya. To our great delight (and surprise!) the parcel arrived and was greatly appreciated.

The picture shows a traditional birth attendant and her patient-wearing one of the watches we sent! The Friends Of Akuem group is now raising funds to buy the Centre a Doppler (a device which measures baby heart beats, and will assist in reducing infant mortality).
